  • My mother used to say that if I got a tattoo, I'd go blind. (Or was it... never mind.) The world has changed. It seems that for every person who gives up smoking, another gets a tattoo. Among the elite, those tattoos are of Disney symbols, attractions, and characters. Why just wear a dumb pair of ears when you can have amazingly intricate art inked into your flesh? You'll meet, every week, someone who has done just that, and who wants both the World and the world to know about it.

  • Bob McLain made his first visit to Disney World during the Nixon Administration. He took his son there for the first time during the Clinton years, and his daughter during the Bush (as in W) years. When not making connections between presidents and trips to Disney World, Bob writes about Disney, writes about zombies (the fast ones!), and writes helpful little guides about how to do technical things. He has no tattoos. For his first Disney tattoo, he has his eye on a full-length Evil Queen.

Haunted Mansion Logo Tattoo

When you work for Disney as a Cast Member, you have to give up a lot of things, such as facial hair, short-shorts, and tattoos. Or rather, visible tattoos. Concealed tattoos are fine. Are CMs tempted to flash their tattoos? Yes! Here's proof...

If you want to work at a Disney theme park or resort, you must maintain the Disney Look.

Disney spells it right out: "Tattoos must be discreetly and completely covered at all times."

So, if you have a 'Plague, Consort of Death' tattoo on your forehead, don't even bother putting in your application, because Disney thinks tattoos are bad, not for public view, upsetting to children, and so forth.

But what if, instead of your forehead, you have that tattoo on your upper arm?

As long as you're not shirtless - and wearing a shirt at all times is another aspect of the Disney Look - the tattoo is no problem. But you have to keep it hidden! You can't just, like, roll up your sleeve and show your ink to park guests.

I guess the Cast Member sporting the Haunted Mansion logo tattoo on his upper arm didn't get the message.

By rolling up his sleeve, while in the park, and while in uniform, he is in violation of the Disney Look!

Good thing the Disney Police were busy interrogating another Cast Member suspected of not wearing underwear (yes, that's part of the Disney Look, too!).

This Cast Member, as the story goes, saw a park guest sporting Haunted Mansion tattoos in full view and did a 'psst, buddy, wanna see?' maneuver, pulling the guest aside and showing him his eerie ink. Of course, a picture was taken.

I bet more Cast Members have tattoos than Disney would like to imagine.

Next time you're in the park, why not find out: don't say to a Cast Member "hey, show me your pins," say instead: "hey, show me your tattoos".

As long as they don't drop their pants, you should be fine.
