Running with the Mouse

About the Column

Disney travel experts agree on one thing: relax, take your time. But when it comes to Disney's marathons and other running events, they're wrong. In a race, you can't take your time. And you also can't show up with just your two feet expecting to win - or even finish! Preparing for a Disney marathon requires discipline, hard work, and good advice. We can't help you with the discipline or the hard work. But Robert Mathis, owner of DisneyRunning and one of the few people designated by Disney as 'Perfectly Goofy' for his frequent participation in their running events (since 1996!), has lots of good advice. So relax, take your time, and read his weekly column.

Robert gives us a full rundown on the 3 different leves of support that Disney Race spectators can contribute.

You have signed up for the Disney race, you have trained, and are ready for the race. But what will your family and friends do? Disney has come up with a great idea to get them involved in your race experience. They have created the ChEAR Squad. These are packages of all different levels and price points. These are great for first time family and friends spectators.

For the upcoming Walt Disney World Half Marathon, Marathon, and Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge, these are the different levels of spectator support.

The introductory level that costs nothing is the Bronze Package. This entails only a free e-newsletter detailing all of the weekend events to help you plan your trip. This is for the more experienced spectators.

The next level up is the Silver Package. This includes what is in the Bronze Package plus a cool gear kit. This will help equip your support team to the have a fun time will cheering you on. This includes a fleece blanket for those cold January race mornings, a neat Mickey clapper and a sporty ChEAR Squad t-shirt. You get all of this great stuff for only $35 for any of the three races!

The next level up is the Gold Package. This includes everything else in the Bronze and Silver Package plus other great stuff. You get a reserved ChEAR Zone viewing location along the course. This is great as you support doesn’t have to fight other spectators trying to get a precious spot to watch their runners. After your support gets done there, they get a reserved grandstand seating at the finish line. Again this is a great perk so your support doesn’t have to fight the crowds to see you finish the race. The package also includes hot and cold beverages and private restrooms. You get all of this for only $50/$60/$75. This is great for your friends and family members with young children.

The final level is the Platinum Package. This includes everything in all the other packages and also adds a set of over the top perks. Your support members will be given the “royal” treatment as they will be allowed into the special Race Retreat that is a option for runners to purchase. The Race Retreat treats everyone like royalty as you have sumptuous brunch with hot and cold beverages in a temperature controlled indoor lounge for those cold race mornings. While they are waiting for you to finish, they will have Disney Character greetings, an information station, and internet access to check live results. If your support has children, the Kiddie Corner will keep them entertained with all kinds of activities including movies to watch. They will also have the luxury of reserved restrooms. No long lines at the Porta Potties! This is a great treat for your family or friends who have supported you over the months of your training! This all for only $85/$100/$150.

These packages are limited so don’t waste any time to purchase these. Your friends and family will thank you!
