About the Column

Finding perfect Disney pictures isn't easy. The obvious places to look, such as Flickr, are awash in pictures posted by folks returning from a Disney trip. With patience, it's possible to find stunning shots, not always 'photographically flawless', but stunning for how the shooter has captured a slice of Disney, big or small, and captured it in such a way that you're inspired to do likewise the next time you're in a Disney park. Enjoy these shots of park perfection!

Perfect Captain Hook & Mr. Smee

Every Disney picture tells a Disney story, don't it, and today our perfect picture comes from Disney Lori, who wisely didn't get too close to this diabolical pair, caught standing in the shade at the Magic Kingdom, plotting.

Mr. Smee is an odd pirate.

He seems decent but bumbling, a humane counterpoint to the horrific Hook and his crew of cutthroats - who, if you've read J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, you know really are cutthroats. One of them, for instance, Barrie describes as having cut his name in blood on the back of a colonial governor.

And Hook himself once killed a crewmember merely because the man bumped into him.

But then there's Mr. Smee, who wants the children to like him, and who offers to save Wendy from the plank if only she'll become his mother. (She refuses.)

Once, in Disney World, a rather know-it-all guest asked Smee why he wanted Wendy to be his mother. The poor Cast Member inside Smee wasn't prepared for that question, and just shook its head slowly back and forth while rubbing its stomach. That was one of the weirdest replies I've yet seen. It seemed to put off the know-it-all guest, too. Smee has spooked me ever since.

Look closely at Mr. Smee's feet. The Cast Member portraying Smee is standing IN those feet. It's amazing how closely the skin tone of the Cast Member's legs matches the fake skin tone of Mr. Smee's fake feet. I betcha Disney matches skin tones...
