Perfect Canada Pavilion Totem Pole
Every Disney picture tells a Disney story, don't it, and today our perfect picture comes from Gary Burke, who climbed the log steps to the Canada Pavilion at the World Showcase and came face-to-visage with one of its permanent residents.
When you think totem pole, you think Alaska.
So what are totem poles doing in EPCOT's Canada Pavilion?
Totem poles were built not just by native Alaskans but also by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, including British Columbia. They aren't so much 'Alaskan' as they are 'Pacific Northwestern'.
Traditionally made from cedar, a totem pole might serve any of numerous purposes. It might commemorate a local event or legend. It might sit atop the grave of a noteworthy warrior or important personage. It might simply be a work of art.
In the Canada Pavilion, the totem poles are most certainly works of art. Often scary ones. Like this fellow, snapped perfectly by Gary Burke:
