Park Perfect

About the Column

Finding perfect Disney pictures isn't easy. The obvious places to look, such as Flickr, are awash in pictures posted by folks returning from a Disney trip. With patience, it's possible to find stunning shots, not always 'photographically flawless', but stunning for how the shooter has captured a slice of Disney, big or small, and captured it in such a way that you're inspired to do likewise the next time you're in a Disney park. Enjoy these shots of park perfection!

Perfect Pirates of the Caribbean Cannons

Every Disney picture tells a Disney story, don't it, and today our perfect picture comes from Ray Horwath, who hushed the parrot on his shoulder not to wake the sleeping pirates who should have been standing guard over these glorious cannons.

Park Perfect has become so popular that I've decided to feature a shot from a different photographer each day rather than devote an entire week to one photographer. You'll still see multiple shots from the same shooters, just not consecutively.

Sometimes, in the queues, we're in such a hurry to board the ride that we miss out on the exquisite details left for us by the Imagineers.

In Disney World's Pirates of the Caribbean, for example, there are displays meant to evoke the inside of a fortress taken over by pirates and used by them as a base of operations.

And what's a fortress without cannons?

As you wend your way through the dank stone passageways en route to the 'dock', take a moment to marvel at the pair of cannons and ample cannonballs awaiting only a pair of pirates drunk enough on rum to loose a few shots across your bow.

Ray Horwath took a splendid 'shot' himself - not of the rum, but of the cannon!

Look at the detail on the walls, which seem to be crumbling a bit in the corners, and how the paint on the barrels of gunpowder is appropriately peeled. Scenes like these truly make you appreciate the amazing abilities of the folks who built the parks.

And now, matey, strike your colors lest ye find a ragged hole through your larboard side...
