About the Column

Back in the old days, it was actually possible to visit every site on the Internet about Disney. Nowadays, it's not even possible to count all the sites on the Internet about Disney. I visit quite a few of them compiling the Hullabaloo, and often I find gems - digitally buried treasure - maintained by folks who love Disney so much it doesn't matter that the traffic to their sites may be a trickle. In Daily DIZcovery, I'll pick a different dynamite Disney site every day, typically one you've never heard about, and hopefully turn their trickle into a torrent.

Claude Coats

The official site for this Disney Legend, Imagineer, and Artist

submit to reddit

Claude Coats is not a house-hold name, probably not even for Disney fans, unless they're the kind of mouse-breathing, Walt-worshipping fanatics who can recite the length of every screw used to build Space Mountain.

Welcome, fanatics!

It's nice to see more of the old-guard Imagineers honored with new sites.

Claude Coats worked at Disney for over five decades. His art graces Disney films, parks, attractions, and pretty near anything you see that makes you say: "wow, that's beautiful".

Claude's site is static, at least for now, with various '-ographies' about him and his work: you'll find a biography, a filmography, even an imaginography. You can also buy prints of Claude's work in the art gallery.

My favorite section, however, is called Flashbacks. There you'll find pictures and stories about Claude by his son, Alan Coats, who also runs the site (thus making it official!). Alan possibly has something special planned for what would have been Claude's 100th birthday on January 17, 2013. It's wonderful to see him keep his father's legacy alive.

If you've never heard of Alan Coats, you're in for a fantastic surprise; and if you are familiar with him, come visit his site to perhaps learn some new things about one of Disney's creative heroes.
