About the Column

Ashley Metz keeps a special book in her South Carolina chateau. It's called the Disney Book of Stinkin' Love. Into that book she pours her passion for the parks, her devotion to Disney World, and from that book, every week, she'll draw forth with characteristic exuberance a chapter exclusively for Disney Dispatch. Ashley welcomes questions, but no matter what you ask, the answer will always be the same, and it will always be correct: Because I Stinkin' Love Disney World!

Finding Hawaii in Disney Films

I feel no envy, no jealousy, that right this very minute Ashley is in Hawaii, possibly snapping pictures of Aulani, definitely soaking up sun or splashing in surf. I'm not jealous because she left behind this article! About Hawaii...

What are some of my favorite... well, I guess the best way to describe this hodgepodge of Hawaii is 'mouse'llaneous. From DVDs to classic short films, this trio is pretty far out!

I love old school Disney animation. It takes me back to a simpler time and place. These antique animations still command my attention despite the lack of computerized graphics and 3D tricks. Just smartly played soundtracks and simple on-liners. And plain old talent!

So today I'm presenting Hawaiian Holiday from 1937. In this short animation, Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, and Donald are on the sunny beaches of Hawaii. Of course, there is the usual slapstick hilarity with poor loveable Goofy. That durn surfboard! Donald's patience is tried over and over by pesky starfish. And I just plain feel for Pluto.

Another animated favorites of mine called Bubble Bee had Pluto and a productive little honeybee going at it! Trust me, neither Pluto nor his nose got much rest in Hawaii.

Take a mmoment to join me and Mickey's gang in a Hawaiian Holiday:

I love Lilo and Stitch. I am going to try really hard to take a Lilo-esque picture while on the beaches of Hawaii. Disney hasn't yet dragged Lilo and Stitch (the movie) into the Vault, so you can buy it everywhere. The 'Big Wave' edition includes special features about how this alohamazing movie was made.

As I prepared for my Hawaiian vacation, I watched Lilo and Stitch again to prepare myself for the beaches, the palms, the shirts. (More about shirts soon!) I like trying to find things in reality that I've seen in movies.

I am in love.

I am a grown woman, but I am in love with a shirt from the little girls section of Target. Here's the story...

Just days before leaving for Hawaii, I'm in my local Target picking up a few necessities (in other words, buying a bunch of junk), and as I turn toward the cosmetic section, wheeling my cart past the little girls area, BAM! - I see it. A shirt featuring Minnie, hand on hip, flower in hair, with the slogan: "I'm on Island Time".

I NEEEEEED that shirt!

I scour the sizes, but of course, they're only available in small, tiny, and super tiny. No large, no extra large. That thing has to fit, somehow. As Cinderella is to the glass slipper, Ashley is to this stinkin' cute shirt!

Well, I hope you enjoyed these Disney nods to Hawaii.

I'll be back next week with many more things that I stinkin' love about Disney!

Aloha!
